Item Description

SPALTED MAPLE "P+" WOOD BOWL #7815 WALSH SMITHSONIAN

Description:

This is a "P+" Bowl made from solid piece of American SPALTED MAPLE.  It is 6.5" in diameter, about 3" high and weighs 0 pound(s) 4 ounces. Suitable for decorative or dry use or food use.

When a log is left on the ground for a year or two, a dramatic change often takes place. A process called “spalting” occurs. Spalting is the beginning of the process where a log rots and breaks down to return to the forest floor. Fungi begin to enter the wood and penetrate deeply into it. The lines of penetration can be in wide bands or pencil thin lines, and, although most often black, other colors are not uncommon. The beeches and maples have the most dramatic spalting I have seen while walnut and cherry spalt little. Some spalted wood with pencil line spalting has a startling resemblance to a map with the black lines resembling a coastline. Florida and Mexico are not uncommonly found. I have heard this wood called “mapwood.” Another common resemblance of spalted wood are “sunset” and “landscape” configurations, particularly when colors are involved. Spalting stops when the wood is cut and dried, but the lines and patterns are permanent.

All of my bowls and vases are made from dry, cured bowl blanks I cut individually from logs.

My work is offered in two styles: My “Gallery Bowl,” or “G” style bowl, is gallery quality. The luster of the finish has to be seen to be appreciated, and has been compared to the finish on a Steinway piano.

My “Period Bowl,” or “P” style bowl is made in a fashion similar to those bowls made hundreds of years ago. Slight tool marks are left visible as typical in early bowls. These bowls are lightly sanded and have a soft, smooth, glowing matt finish.

Bowls with a “+” designation after the number are pieces I consider particularly nice. Often it will be because their figure is extraordinary but it could be color, shape, design, etc. These are pieces that do not come along very often, and I anticipate that less that 10% of my work will carry the “+” designation. If you see one of these pieces, you will immediately know that it is exceptional.

In a newspaper article on David Walsh, David Dennis, a retail buyer for the Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian said “Walsh is one of his top vendors”. Dennis, who is amazed at how light Walsh’s bowls are, said his bowls sell between $60 and $200 but the highly figured larger bowls have sold between $300 and $800.

Photos are of the actual piece. Photos appearing after that of the bottom of the piece showing wood, number and signature are those taken around the studio or on site recovery operations. PLEASE! Use a ruler to help you determine its size as the photos do not show that.
