Set of 5 Malte-Brun Maps c1860
These 6 Full-Colour steel-plate engraved maps are all from the Atlas de la Géographie Universelle ou Description de toutes les parties du
monde, Sur un Plan Monde, D’Apres Les Grandes Divisions Naturelles du
Globe, Nouvelle (new) Edition By Malte-Brun, updated
by M.J.J.N. Huot, published by Garnier Freres Editors, Paris
c.1860. All maps measure Measures 15 x 11 inches (38 x 28cm), with the image 11.5 x 9.5 inches (30 x
24cm).
Map 1: This map is of Ancient Palestine/Israel show in 3 maps. It shows three different
maps of Palestine at different times - 1) Palestine under the Romans; 2) Kingdom
of of the Israelites under David and Solomon; and 3) Palestine divided into the
Twelve Tribes.
The
larger map is of " Palestine under the Romans" and shows Palestine divided up into
the main divisions of Roman Palestine - Judea, Samaria, Galilee, as well as the
nieghbouring provinces of Syria & Arabia Petra. The 2nd map shows a map of
Israel at its hieght under the Kings David and Solomon and is divided up into
Israel, Israeli tribrutary states, and other nieghbouring states each shown in
different coluurs. The final map shows Ancient Israel divided up into the 12
tribes of Israel and the nieghbouring Phillistines, and the Kingdoms of Damas
& Gessour as well as other tribes. Has few tears on edges but only in the margin.
Map 2: This map is of Central Germany c1860-65. It shows all the central German states, each with clearly shown borders and names. It includes a Key listing the 22 German states, each with a number, allowing you to find the smaller states, and enclaves of one state within another - something that is very common in this region. Some of the states include: Brunswick, the Anhalt principalities, the Hesse states, the Saxe Duchies including Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, the Schwarzbourg states, and many more.
Map 3: This map is of Bavaria, Bade & Wurtemberg c1860-65 - It shows the southern states of Germany, of which the largest were Bavaria, Bade & Wurtemberg, as well as Hesse-Darmstadt & Hohenzollern (original principality of the Prussian Royal House).
Map 4: This map is of Siberia or Russian Asia c1860-65 - It shows Russian Asia as well as showing adjacent nations of the Chinese
Empire (Manchouria & Mongolia), Russia in Europe, the
northern island/s of Japan, and the coast of Alaska (shown as Russian
American). Russia in Asia is divided up into
the internal administrative divisions/governments each
clearly named and borders shown. A large number of towns/cities are shown, but
as expected the number & density of town/cities drops the further east, into
Siberia-proper you go. Across the map are the names of the
various ethnic/tribal groups over the areas that they inhabit. It shows the Artic region still
as yet largely unexplored, however the northern Siberian coastline is fairly
accurate based on today's geography.
Map 5: This map is of Cross Sections of Terrain from a
number of European Locations. They start in one city/area and
go to another - including some in mountains. They represent the various
type of rocks/minerals/etc that underlie/make up these areas, using different
colours to represent the different rocks/minerals in the engravings.
Each cross-section includes a key that shows the various types of
rock/minerals in the area, along with the colour shown
in. It would be interesting to
compare up-to-date geological findings of these areas, with the beliefs of the
scientists 140 years ago, to see how accurate they were. This is a
very rare map from Malte-Brun that I have never seen anywhere else, so would be
great for someone’s collection of 19th Century maps to make it a more
diverse collection.
The areas covered
are:
Cross-section West to East across the north of France
Cross-section South to North through centre of France
(passing through the Ardenne & Limousin)
Cross-section of northern England (Cumberland to Durham)
Cross-section of Derbyshire (Central
England), and
5
Cross-sections of different areas of the Pyrenees.
The maps are fully coloured, and have very detailed representation of the geography,
including the rivers, lakes, mountains, coastlines and islands, as well as the
major towns/cities, and road & rail links (as were at the time).
The detail of the geography is quite amazing, especially where there are
lots of mountains/rivers/coastlines - these maps are amongst the most detailed maps you will find from the mid-1800's.
