Item Description
This weathervane is a genuine antique, used in the Boston area. It was on my grandfather's house in Medford, Mass. until 1978, when he sold his house. At that time I got it from him. It was made in 1916 in Boston by a listed artist, Oliver J. Nelson. He was a friend of the family, and also gave us a oil paining of a tall ship in Boston Harbor, that I sold last year to a well known N.H antique dealer and collector. Both item have been appraised by the Antique Roadshow, when it came to Providence, a few years back, and was recently appraised by a pair of Newport antique dealers and certified appraisers for 2-4 thousand each. The weathervane stands 25" tall, has an 18" pointer, approx. 15" directionals, and the original bracket, measuring 5" x 5" w/7 screw holes on each side. All the working parts are in great shape in spite of being exposed to many nasty N.E winters. It is made of wrought iron, with many layers of paint . The top is very unusual. It is a 3 dimensional birdhouse, with an arched door,3 1/2" x 2" ,overall 14" x 5" x 7" . this includes a nice detail of steps with a twisted metal railing.the birdhouse has 5 small holes on the sides nd one on the bottom. It also has some rust due to being used. I can forward more pictures if you want.On the very top there was a clover leaf, that got snapped off, but I still have it, so it can be restored. The work is quite remarkable and during my extensive research I have never seen another one anything like it. It can be veiwed in person by appointment. It may be picked up, or it can be shipped using USPS calculator or by another method of your choice. Insurance is STRONGLY suggested. Please email us with any questions. There is a reserve price but a small starting bid.
