Detroit brimmed with innovation in the late 1950s, as designers and engineers added dynamic, space-age styling and a dizzying array of new features to the American automobile. In 1957, Ford pushed the styling and engineering envelope even further, with the first mass-produced retractable hardtop, the Skyliner. With the push of a single button, the Skyliner's hardtop literally unscrewed itself from the windshield frame, then folded neatly and tucked itself under a long, flat trunk lid that lifted on its own to make way. In about 25 seconds, the Skyliner driver could transform their coupe into a true convertible.
Ford offered the retractable hardtop for only three years, 1957 through 1959, and unfortunately, it was not a big seller. However, while many manufacturers now offer retractable hardtops, the Skyliner continues to draw crowds and inspire awe.
The 1958 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner offered here is a pristine example that benefits from a complete frame-off restoration which had been conducted to very high standards. Beautifully finished in red and white, with restored brightwork, the Skyliner is fully dressed with dual chrome side view mirrors, fender skirts, and a continental kit. As well, the car rides on a set of new, wide whitewall tires mounted on powder-coated steel wheels with chrome wire wheel covers. The inviting interior features new red and white upholstery, and displays a beautifully restored dash and steering wheel. Amenities include power steering, a heater and a pushbutton-operated AM radio, along with a recently installed, 134R-compliant air conditioning system for comfortable cruising under all conditions.
The 352 cubic inch "Interceptor Special" V8 engine has been completely rebuilt, and is topped with a chrome dress-up kit, while exhaust gases exit through a new dual exhaust system. The Skyliner also features a new wiring harness, along with a rebuilt starter, generator, carburetor, radiator and heater core, ensuring an enjoyable, trouble-free driving experience. Importantly, all of the electronic and mechanical components associated with the retractable hardtop have been rebuilt as well.
A wonderful example of Ford's unique retractable hardtops, this Skyliner is offered with a file containing receipts totaling over $100,000 for the restoration. As one of the most recognizable and awe-inspiring American cars ever produced, this Skyliner will certainly please its next fortunate owner.

4. All sales are "as is" and "where is". Bidder is responsible for inspections and verification of condition, authenticity, and completeness of any item purchased.
