213: 1960 Lincoln Continental Mark V Convertible
315 bhp, 430 cu. in. overhead valve V8 engine, single two-barrel carburetor, three-speed automatic transmission, independent front suspension with coil springs and wishbones, live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 131"

While the 1958-1960 Lincoln Continental continues to rank among the largest post-war American cars ever produced, they were also one of the most comfortable, powerful, and stylish luxury cars of the era. The release of these large automobiles coincided with a sharp economic recession and the first wave of conservatism in the American automotive market since the end of World War II. The impact was severe. In fact, while Lincoln had achieved 56,323 sales in 1956, that number dropped by more than half to 20,683 examples by 1960. Meanwhile, the "downsized" Lincoln models would not be ready for release until late 1960.

Consequently, the Mark V received minor cosmetic changes and continued largely unchanged for the 1960 model year. The front end was modified with the grille receiving a new insert, while the bullet-shaped front bumper guards were moved inboard of the canted headlamps. The profile of the closed models was altered considerably with the adoption of a new rear window, and the rocket-inspired rear end styling was simplified, and would continue in its basic form on later models. Together, these alterations combined to create what many enthusiasts consider the most attractive and subdued design of the fabulous 1958-1960 Lincoln series.

The Lincoln Continental Mark V Convertible pictured here is one of only 2,044 examples produced in 1960, and it is among fewer than 500 surviving examples today. An excellent Presidential Black exterior finish, complemented by a power-operated black Hartz convertible top and rear fender skirts, accents the impressive dimensions of the Continental. In addition, the car rides on a set of proper whitewall tires that surround steel wheels with full wheel covers.

The handsome original interior contains rich red upholstery that displays a nice patina, along with matching red carpeting and a cockpit-style instrument panel enhanced by an engine-turned insert. Standard features on the Mark V include a six-way power-adjustable front seat, tinted glass, and power vent windows. In addition, this car is fitted with power brakes, power steering, power windows, and a power-operated radio antenna.

Mechanically, the Lincoln features a rebuilt 430 cubic inch V8 engine that is beautifully detailed and finished to period correct standards, and fitted with a period correct battery, as well as correct hoses and fittings. In addition, the automatic transmission has been rebuilt, along with the braking and suspension systems. The underside of the car shows as well as any other part of the Mark V, and boasts an impressively detailed chassis and well-finished body pans. Notably, the quality of this Continental has been confirmed by a well-respected national expert on 1958-1960 Lincolns, who observed that the engine bay features all of the correct stamps and markings, just as the car left the Wixom, Michigan factory nearly five decades ago.

Despite the economic challenges of the late 1950s, the dynamic energy that inspired the creation of the 1958-1960 Lincoln Continental continues to inspire onlookers and enthusiasts everywhere. Likewise, this outstanding and well-detailed 1960 Lincoln Continental Mark V Convertible will continue to delight its next owner with its style, ride and comfort, as well as its rarity in the collector car marketplace.

Important Notice
RM Auctions usually auctions automobiles at the rate of 20 lots per hour. On some occasions, eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. RM recommends placing a realistic absentee bid now, as insurance to help avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also re-open a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because of a missed audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that RM Auctions may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above, or under any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tying eBay live bids. Also please note that all RM Auctions lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 13% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by RM Auctions, Inc. All final auction and invoice information will be supplied by RM Auctions, Inc., and all other information should be considered preliminary. Winning Notification and Billing: After the FINAL session in this auction is complete RM Auctions will send e-mail invoices. This process normally takes up to two days. All final auction and invoice information will be supplied by RM Auctions, Inc., and all other information should be considered preliminary. This auction will be conducted on a live auction floor and over the Internet through eBay Live. If you choose to place an absentee bid, please take a moment to learn how eBay Live absentee bidding works by visiting eBay's website.
