276: 1954 Lincoln Capri Hardtop Coupe
205bhp, 317 cu. in. overhead valve "Y" block V8 engine with automatic transmission, independent front suspension via coil springs and wishbones, rear suspension via semi-elliptical leaf springs and live axle, four wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 123"

Lincoln's role within the Ford Motor Company was nothing if not variable. Beginning with its acquisition from gifted engineer and founder Henry Leland in the mid-1920s, it was always positioned above Ford's mainstream bread and butter cars wearing the blue oval. Until the late 1930s, Lincolns were coachbuilt cars, built to compete with the very best -- Packard, Cadillac, Duesenberg, Pierce-Arrow and all the other fine car makers.

The market changed, and the coachbuilt business dried up as the Depression ate into even the biggest of fortunes. At the same time, it became possible to produce fine cars in volume. It was this combination of factors that resulted in the first clean sheet Lincoln design, introduced in 1949.

The second major update arrived in 1952 with a major new body update and the introduction of the "Y" block overhead valve engine. It was in many ways the most impressive of the wave of overhead valve engines introduce in the immediate postwar era, with exceptional performance and unmatched reliability. It was so good, in fact, that it powered Lincoln into dominance in the grueling Mexican Carrera Panamericana road races -- winning the first five places in 1952, the first four in 1953, culminating in a 1-2 sweep in 1954.

The example offered here is a Capri -- the top of the Lincoln line for 1954, and the car Life magazine declared to be the safest car of the year. It is a largely unrestored example which still wears most of its original paint, as suggested by its odometer reading of just 21,157 miles.
The vendor reports that this lovely Capri runs and drives very well, as might be expected for a largely unrestored survivor. The engine starts readily and idles smoothly; the automatic transmission shifts quietly and the car accelerates smartly. The ride is both comfortable and quiet, while the steering retains the precise original feel that it seems only a low mileage original car ever does. With its excellent performance and smart color combination, this top of the line Capri will make a lovely addition to any postwar American car collection.

Important Notice
RM Auctions usually auctions automobiles at the rate of 20 lots per hour. On some occasions, eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. RM recommends placing a realistic absentee bid now, as insurance to help avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also re-open a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because of a missed audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that RM Auctions may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above, or under any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tying eBay live bids. Also please note that all RM Auctions lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 13% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by RM Auctions, Inc. All final auction and invoice information will be supplied by RM Auctions, Inc., and all other information should be considered preliminary. Winning Notification and Billing: After the FINAL session in this auction is complete RM Auctions will send e-mail invoices. This process normally takes up to two days. All final auction and invoice information will be supplied by RM Auctions, Inc., and all other information should be considered preliminary. This auction will be conducted on a live auction floor and over the Internet through eBay Live. If you choose to place an absentee bid, please take a moment to learn how eBay Live absentee bidding works by visiting eBay's website.
