GM’s maximum engine size for its midsize cars increased to 455 cubic inches in 1970, and Buick took full advantage with its new GS455 that produced more torque than any other production engine except Cadillac’s 474 and 500. The GS already used cold-air induction, but the 455 featured larger valves, high-flow heads and a hot new camshaft, all of which resulted in 350 horsepower and an unbelievable 510 lb-ft of torque that was all in at only 2,800 rpm. Power levels were slightly reduced in 1971 to 315hp and, although a new rating system used a different evaluation procedure, remained strong for 1972.

Like earlier models, the 1972 Buick GS was also a beneficiary of GM’s strong styling team, with curving lines and bold touches that set it apart from its corporate counterparts. The beautiful Cornet Gold model offered here is without a doubt an excellent example of the GS combination of looks, luxury and go. A Black vinyl top and chromed Magnum-style five spoke wheels are effective trim options that work very well with the Gold finish.

In addition to its handsome appearance, the car is also an unusual fully-optioned four-speed, one of only 84 built. Options include power windows, power seats, tilt and power steering, power disc brakes, factory air conditioning, console and a special gauge package. Of course, the GS is already well equipped, with heavy duty suspension that includes special shocks and spring rates and a stout differential to handle the 455’s ample output.

A rare numbers-matching original California car, this is a fine illustration of Buick’s great big-block muscle machine.
