Rare Antique / Vintage Decade Resistance Box

McIntose Battery & Optical Co., Chicago

I believe this is an antique resistor substitution box because it is manufactured by “McIntose Battery & Optical Co., Chicago”.  McIntosh Battery & Optical Company was active from the 1880s until ca 1930 at 141 and 143 Wabash Avenue, Chicago, Ill., USA. In later years the company was trading as McIntosh Stereopticon Company.

That would date this resistance box at 1930, or before.

The resistor substitution box allows the user to select a resistance by use of shorting pins.  The box is wood, and I'm fairly certain the top is Bakelite.  The manufacturer is McIntose Battery & Optical Co., Chicago; no model number.  This equipment is offered As-Is, no big dings or scratches beyond what one would expect.  The black top is in very good condition and needs to be cleaned.  The brass screws in the top are all in excellent condition.  All pins are included.

The wooden base is in very good condition.  The varnish is shiny and the wood has only very small marks on it.  The bottom wooden plate is cracked; however, this can not be seen because it is on the bottom.

The box has setments marked 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 10.0, 20.0, 30.0, and 40.0 Ohms.
