This complete classic bathroom set includes a mortise lock with strikeplate, backplates, and handles. At some point just before 1900 two things happened. Nickleplating of solid brass became popular and women got tired of trying to keep brass exposed to moisture from tarnishing. The result was this type of bathroom handles. This is not a mismatched st this is exactly as it was sold and used. The nickle plate side goes on the interior of the bathroom door. Why, nickle doesn't tarnish! Early bath fixtures were first made of solid brass. As soon as nickle plating became economical, the tarnished brass was gone from bathrooms and kitchens for ever. History lesson is over.
In this set, the exterior backplates and door knob the lock are solid brass. The interior set and the lock face are nickle plated. The polished plates make it hard to tell but nickle is silver colored similar to chrome. The interior side of the lock also has a thumbturn for the privacy lock. All metal surfaces have been stripped and cleaned of any rust, paint ,or debris. The brass and nickle has been professionally polished. The nickle plating is beginning to show minor wear and ageing, but still looks relatively good as the photos show. The interior of the lock mechanism has been professional serviced, cleaned, and oiled. The handles are adjustable and come with their original working set screws. The entire set is in excellant condition and ready to install.
This victorian set was made around 1900 as the patent dates on the backplates are marked. The backplates measure 2 1/4" x 7". The solid brass nickle plated lock face is 7/8" wide X 5 1/4" tall. The latch as in similar locks can be reversed for left or right hand doors.
