This is a great quality, possibly Liberty & Co. design, large Arts and Crafts Golden Oak, Copper Handles, 2 Glass Door and 2 Drawer Bookcase / Display Cabinet / Sideboard, dating to around c1900.
This is a great Arts and Crafts design Library Bookcase, which is made I think of Tiger Oak, and has wonderful grain and Muldulary rays / lines to the figured Oak. It is I think possibly a Liberty & Co. Piece / design, as I have had a very similar styled Bookcase a few years ago, which carried the Liberty Plaque, but this one does not, so please use your own references, and is been sold as is, without makers mark. It is a nice larger size, and is made of thick oak, and is quite heavy. It has a nice top section, which overhangs the lower bookcase, with just below, it has a pair of very useful drawers. Below, is a pair of heavy and large beaded edge glass doors, with inside on both sides it has 2 thick adjustable height shelfs 3 including the base shelf. Because of it size, it can take larger / taller books, so is a great piece for diplaying your treasured books. At the bottom it has a small shaped lower apron / skirt. On each side is a nice almost gothic inspired pierced arch sections at the bottom. It still retains its, very unsusual Drawer handles and matching doors handles / keyhole escutheons, which are solid copper, and before you ask, yes these are the original handles. The doors still retain their original locks which are stamped " I.G " which I have seen stamped on Liberty & Co. Locks, before on their funiture. Each lock has a key, which works well, with one key, only fiting its relevant lock.
It is in very good original condition, with a few tiny nicks and marks in places, consistant with its age and use with a faint stain to one side on the top. On the top at the back, I think it might have had a small back rail at sometime, as it has oak filled in small dowels, but looks great as it is. It is a truely stunning Arts and Crafts Bookcase, which typifies what the Arts and Crafts movement was all about. It stands 47 3/16 of an inch tall and is 55 5/8 of an inch at its widest and is just under 13 1/4 inches at its deepest, with the main body of the bookcase been11 1/8 of an inch deep at its maximum.
I am also listing over the next couple of weeks or so Art Deco Pieces of Furniture, including Figured Walnut Pieces, Oak Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, 19th Century Pine and Mahogany furniture, Some Retro 1950's and 1960's, and Eames Era, Modernist Furniture ect. All started at £1.00 with no reserve, so please take a look if interested, Thanks.
