Japanese Glass Ball Fishing Float, Found in Alaska
Up for auction is an antique Japanese glass ball fishing float. My dad and I picked it up from a beach on the Bering Sea, about 100 miles from King Salmon, Alaska in the mid 1980s. It may have floated around the Bering Sea or lay on that beach for decades before we found it. It is a nice example of the early glass floats. It is about the size of a baseball and is a greenish blue in color with bubbles in the glass. This float has some very nice net markings made from the sand etching the glass for years before the net rotted away. It has a mold seam and a makers mark that looks like a "+" with line connecting two ends and extending past one end and a dash on the opposite side of the "+". I don't know what that marking means, but there are books out available with that information in it. The float has no cracks and it would make a nice addition to any nautical, fishing or Alaska collection.
