You are viewing an interesting Mexican or South American retablo or ex-voto painted with oil paints on a wooden plaque. I am offering it at no reserve with a low opening bid. I would estimate it was painted sometime between 1900 and 1920 . There is a lot of writing in pen on the lower portion of the wood with references to names (Don Ruben and Don Rafael), machetes, and a saint who saved the people driving the mules down the hillside. My Spanish is not great, but I gather that the two peasants driving the donkeys were saved from death by the intervention of their saint (looks like the saint's name is: "La Santa Crus de C****maro" unfortunately there is some paint missing from the name). Like many retablos, this is naievely painted and has a primitive, folk art look to it. In Mexico, many retablos were hung at home as devotionals rather than as offerings in the local church. This folk art painting measures approximately 15 3/4 inches by 11 1/2 inches. There is overall paint loss (please see photos) and wear. The back of the painting shows worm holes and paint residue. Shipping will be $28 within the U.S.A. Overseas bidders will be quoted seperately. Please bid with confidence on this collectible example of outsider folk art.
