.............. ... For those of you who are not aware, our home burnt down recently, and we had to replace all of our camera equipment, research material, etc. (some of which can never be replaced, unfortunately), and the first book that I bought was the new Edition of the “The Red Book”.
Up until today this particular Half Cent was known to me as the 1809/6 Variety. However, when I double checked The Red Book for accuracy, I was surprised to say the least, that there is no 1809/6 listed, and that this particular Variety is known as the 1809/9 (Inverted Nine); and is much more scarce than I realized. Although the mintage numbers given are for the whole series of the 1909, and nothing is mentioned about the mintage for each separate Variety, I only realized how scarce it was, when I saw the Premium change so drastically as the grade went up.
Apparently, there are far less of this particular Variety than any of the others, as the Premium for one of this type is higher than any of the others. The Red Book is basically known to the Collector as the “Bible“ of Coin Collecting. It is not a Cherry Picker‘s Guide, or one of the newer versions of research material. The Red Book has been consistent from the beginning, and lists only Major Varieties. There were more professional contributor‘s to this book, than any other that I know of, so I have to believe what I read here, if for no other reason than it’s reliability, consistency, and reputation.
At any rate, the coin itself is a very nice example of this Variety, with full detail that shows only the slightest amount of wear under high magnification. The patina is outstanding, and shows a light chocolate brown toning that pleases the eye and is sure to add Interest as well as Value to your Collection.
