This auction is for a superb large size quality hardback edition entitled “The Golden Age of English Manuscript, 1200-1500,” by Richard Marks and Nigel Morgan, lavishly illustrated with FORTY wonderful FULL-COLOUR plates, and TWENTY-THREE in black and white.

It was published by Book Club Associates, of London, in 1981.

This is the first comprehensive selection in colour of manuscripts from 1200 to 1500 - the richest period of English manuscript painting.  The authors provide a history of the subject and describe the different centres of production.  The influence of Italian and French artists is discussed in relation to English manuscript painting; the work of Matthew Paris at St. Albans and the East Anglican School are reappraised, and the role of court and aristocratic patronage is fully assessed.

This beautifully illustrated book covers the centuries of the luxury personal Psalters and Books of Hours.  The manuscripts rank among the finest achievements of medieval painting, and include masterpieces such as “The Lindesey Psalter”, “The Life of Saint Alban”, “The Trinity Apocalypse”, “The Oscott Psalter”, “The Liber Regalis”, “The Beaufort/Beauchamp Hours”, and “The Sherborne Missal”.

The book measures 11.25 inches 8.5 inches.

The 119 pages are nice and neat.  The binding is very good with no loose or missing pages. 

There are NO inscriptions and NO other ink or pencil markings in the book.

The original cloth hardback cover is in very good condition for its age and is clean, having been largely protected by the dust-jacket.  The illustrated dust-jacket is very good for its age, with minor wear, and has not been corner-clipped.  The gold on the spine of the book is very good.
