Pan Xiaoling ,
female, Han nationality, was born in 1956 in Huxian county, Shaanxi
province. She began to create peasant paintings after her graduation
from the junior middle school in 1974. She set up a studio in her own
house and trained more than twenty peasant painters
successively. Her paintings have been put on show in provincial and
national exhibitions many times, and also published in newspaper and
magazines; many of them are in the collections of foreign friends.
And now, she is a member of Huxian County Peasant Painting
Association and of Shaanxi Province Peasant Painting Association.

Background
The Chinese Huxian peasant
painting is one of the best examples of Chinese folk art.
Huxian is a small village near Xian City in Shaanxi Province
of China. These painters are a group of farmers who started
painting in the 1950s, and have since gained national and
international fame. The most outstanding feature of the
paintings is that they vividly depict aspects of daily life
in the countryside, their work activities, lively festivals,
special events, celebrations and colorful local costumes by
using simple painting techniques. The paintings are bold and
whimsical. Their works of art reflect their feelings, their
thoughts, their wishes for the future, customs and the
beauty they see in the world around them. Each painting is
the result of the artists' industrious labour and each has
its own individual painting style. Their style can be
described as primitive, with child-like figures and bright
colors which are not always true to life. These colorful,
