Item Description
Dent, Edward. (1876-1957) & Karl Friderich. Autograph and AMQS. A scarce autograph from the influential British musicologist, translator and academic. On the same page with an inscription and AMQS from the singer, Karl Friderich.

This autograph is from a book kept by Lore Hirsch, author of a Holocaust memoir detailing her ultimately successful struggle to rescue her brother from Auschwitz.  Her collection of musical autographs, including the present item, was carried by her as she escaped with her family to Argentina and then to New York in 1938. Later, Hirsh became a prominent psychologist with a career that lasted 40 years and included listings in "Who's Who of American Women" and "Who's Who of Women Medical Specialists."

Dent was a director and later governor of Sadler  Wells Opera, and a director of Covent Garden Opera Trust. He retired from his professorship in 1941, and from then on he lived in London. In 1953 he was one of the first two musicians to be elected a Fellow of the British Academy. In 1961 the Royal Musical Association instituted a Dent Medal which is awarded annually to recipients selected for their outstanding contributions to musicology.
