Antique Maps of the United States - New Jersey CD

Over 40 + magnificent maps of New Jersey drawn between 1880 and 1925 acquaint you with the layout and important landmarks of 30 cities in this fascinating state. The early history of New Jersey reads pretty much likes that of most eastern states. This region was initially occupied by native Indians, primarily the Lenni-Lenape. The Dutch and Swedish traders who first landed here hoped to acquire a new territory for themselves. Several battles followed between the natives and the Europeans. Eventually, the natives had to give in to the superior firepower of the invaders.

Ironically, neither the Dutch nor the Swedes could hold on to the territory for too long. The English defeated them and became the new owners of the territory. British traders swapped many small-value objects for rights to lands, and the colony soon resembled their homeland. By 1738, however, the state had become an independent British colony.

Interestingly, in 1676, New Jersey was originally two colonies: West Jersey and East Jersey. The Eastern colony was dominated by New York; the Western colony was largely controlled by Pennsylvanians. Struggles between the colonies continued until 1702, when they were united as New Jersey, a colony governed by New York.

The state was however far from peaceful. Driven out of their ancestral homelands, the natives were thirsting for revenge. They found an able and willing ally in the French, and the two joined hands to fight the British in the French Indian War. The English won and finally the state was peaceful. New Jersey settlers were free to go back to their farms and continue growing crops. New Jersey was overwhelmingly farm country, with a few industrial areas here and there, which comprised mainly of iron mines and cloth mills.

New Jersey played a significant role in the Revolutionary War and then became the third state in the Union to ratify the American constitution.

This CD features 42 antique maps of New Jersey, drawn between 1880 and 1925, and recounts how the state was transformed during this period.
